Eddie Plank: A Favorite Son of Gettysburg (The New York Times)

(Paul Thompson/Library of Congress)

The NY Times published a piece about Eddie Plank, the Hall of Fame pro baseball pitcher who played for the Gettysburg College team but never attended. This 2013 piece was written by Hillel Kuttler, and here is the opening excerpt:

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — This week’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point in the Civil War, might also bring renewed attention to Eddie Plank, a relatively unappreciated baseball star in the early 20th century who spent most of his life here. The battle, fought on the first three days of July in 1863, stamped Little Round Top, Seminary Ridge and Pickett’s Charge into America’s military lexicon.
